This ancient Śiva temple is located in Vaikkom Taluk, Kōttayam District, and comes after Talayōlapparambu in the Kōttayam - Vaikkom route. From Kaṭuthuruthy junction one has to travel 200 metres east and reach the temple located on a gently rolling hill. Kaṭuthuruthy in the late medieval era was the capital of Vatakkumkūr Kingdom till its annexation to Vēnād (later Trāvancore) in the 18th century.

At some point in time, the temple was gutted by fire and was rebuilt during the reign of Śri Mūlam Thirunal of Trāvancōre State. Some of the dāru śilpas salvaged from the fire guttted temple have been preserved in the slope of the roof of Valiambalam.

Uṇṇunīli sandēśam, a 14th century literary work in Malayāḷam has reference to the temple and its locale. Though the locale is known by other names in the work, scholars establish that it is the same Kaṭuthuruthy of later days.
